Theft Prevention Tips
The holiday season is here and so are the thieves!
Police in neighboring municipalities are seeing an increase in overnight thefts from vehicles! These thefts not only occurred in shopping center and hotel parking lots, but in personal driveways and parking lots in quiet neighborhoods as well. We hope this bulletin helps prevent those thieves from finding new victims in Newtown and Wrightstown Townships !
The thieves have targeted GPS systems, laptops, I-pods, handbags, wallets, etc.
Most of these thefts are crimes of opportunity; meaning if, you provide the opportunity, the thief will take “it!” During recent investigations, investigators discovered that many residents “did not want to bother the police.” or “…thought it not important enough to call.” For that reason our Detective Division reminds residents to use these preventive tips:
- Secure vehicles at all times, even that brief stop at the convenience store.
- Remove personal belongings.
They will appear tempting to the passerby, including GPS / mapping systems, laptops, satellite radios, gym bags, etc.
- Be aware of your surroundings. The average fitness club member enters the gym for an hour workout.
Anyone watching you, then [can] know that your auto is unattended for that time. They have an hour to break in and steal anything you just bought at the mall, or locked in your car because you thought it more secure than the gym’s locker!
- Call police immediately, at 9-1-1, if you think something / someone is suspicious!
